The New Uniform… Sweats!

by Mar 17, 2021Fashion

I mean… I’m in sweatpants right now, aren’t you? My uniform is black sweats, I own various brands (we’ll get to that) black Ugg slippers, a screen-print or rock-band tee, and one of my many hoodies, sweatshirts or an occasional sloppy sweater. I’ve been known to mix it up, and by known, my son and husband could give a shit what I’m wearing, but I think the Trader Joe’s kids take notice when I bust out the David Bowie tee, cheetah trimmed Vans… no they don’t, whatevs, it’s all for me anyway.

When it comes to sweatpants it’s all about the fit and comfort of your particular body. The weight of the fabric, ankle elastic or wide leg, pockets, drawstring or elastic waist, cropped, and other style features. OK… let’s get to the recs!

I can’t recommend sweats without first introducing you to Melody Ehsani, the L.A. fashion brand my daughter works for, and the many cool pieces of streetwear they design and produce. Their newest sweats come in bright, happy colors like Saffron, Cerulean blue (the famous shade of Devil Wears Prada), Clover, Petal Pink, and Vintage Black. The heavyweight fabric, relaxed fit, elastic waist w/drawstring, elastic cuff, and 80/20 fabric make them soft and comfy and wash up beautifully. M.E. added two awesome deep front pockets, and a back pocket with the sweet M.E. rose patch above it that gives all her pieces the designer’s recognizable branding. They are good quality and look fresh and hip… get the matching hoodie, and hey, they look good on dudes too!

Yara Shahidi, star of Black-ish and Grown-ish, loves Melody Ehasani! Yara looks sunny and bright in the M.E. Saffron sweat-set in a write-up on Vogue; “Yara Shahidi Makes the Case for Generation Z Yellow”.

Hey sporty-spice! You can’t go wrong with Nike, Adidas, Puma, Athleta, and Lulu Lemon, the quality control is great and the fabrics are made for sports and movement… so they will hold up for years and years.

It’s hard to not just throw on a pair of sweats these days, I mean, where ya goin’ girlfriend? Fit is most important, which is kind of hard to judge from your laptop, tablet or phone… so I have given you choices from brands I trust that make quality, consistent products.

I threw in a pair of wide-leg, light-weight pants from Targèt because I have a pair that I love to lounge in on the deck when the weather is warmer. I have also cropped a fave pair of sweats for less coverage on hot days.

Running out to Whole Foods? n:philanthropy’s got you! A bit pricier, but guuuurl…. you’re gonna look fire!

Someday we’ll go back to wearing jeans and pants with zippers and buttons… but for now, be comfy and cozy while you can. xo-Katie
